Back after a Week of Stormy Weather

This past week has been very much in the flavour of the Tower…

On Monday the worst storms in over 100 years began their destructive journey across the East coast of Australia. Heavy rain and gale force winds tore through the landscape bringing down trees and power-lines. Houses flooded and over 300,000 homes lost power; trains, roads, shops and schools closed – turning the entire coast into a surreal and dark place …

The Tower - Nine Lives Tarot The Tower – Nine Lives Tarot

We’ve seen huge trees uprooted, trees fallen on top of houses, roads flooded, power-lines down, storm drains flooding and more rain than many places get in a whole year! Despite all the destruction, we are among the lucky ones (house still standing), and if anything – these storms have been a reminder of what matters in life: everyone we care about :)

Being offline during the Storms

Along with power outages and loss of connectivity, the website went off-line for a few days… If you tried to visit, I am sorry for not being there to greet you at the door. Now that things appear to be getting back to normal, I do hope to see you here soon again :)

What to do without the power of electricity …

The first 2 days we enjoyed cold baked beans by candlelight – cosy, yes … though the forces of nature always make me think how very small we are in the scope of the big expansive space out there … and how much we depend on modern inventions for shelter, work, food and play …

With the power gone and no phones (mobile towers were down as well), I did sketches for the back design on the now almost complete deck of playing cards … Drawing by candlelight, I tried to imagine what it would have been like to be an artist in the olden days, without the luxury of artificial light – ever. I think would have needed a candle-making venture on the side, being a night-owl I’d need a big supply :)

The coloured version of the back will be in my next post, along with the house of Spades / Swords …

Thank you for visiting – and stay safe and well!

  1. Yes, it was certainly some storm, and as you say it has probably helped us see a lot of things from other perspectives. Perhaps we need to have a day or so (every now and then) without access to all those things we take for granted…

Love your preliminary sketch for the back of the cards.
